Abstract

As an explanation of the trafficking of women, I believe this explanation to be specious. As Soviet culture developed, it taught the people under its control to consider each other, not as people, or as animals, but as machines, whose purpose was to meet the production quotas of the state. This idea was strongly applied to women, whose mechanical task was to produce children: more little machines to join the ranks and produce for the state. ln the post-Soviet era, this idea has not dissipated. Women are still considered as less than human: not animal but mechanical in nature.
