Abstract
My thesis uses China's minority education system as a system and set of policies with which to analyze and evaluate the purpose, veracity and implications of"minority integration" as a national goal. I will argue that China's minority education system seeks to subvert the sense of mino1ity distinctiveness and unique identity that, ironically, is officially stated policy. The thesis will examine the formation of and changes within the mino1ity education system, highlighting specific challenges within particular regions and amongst people of certain traditions, whose educational backgrounds and current opportunities conflict. Finally, I will demonstrate that Beijing's policies of cultural autonomy and political integration are not complimentary but in tension with one another and often produce contradictory results. My thesis uses China's minority education system as a system and set of policies with which to analyze and evaluate the purpose, veracity and implications of"minority integration" as a national goal.
