Abstract
This paper aims to explore the phenomenon of Raas competitions and focus on how these competitions engage specifically with the Gujarati diaspora in the United States of America. Extracting from scholars such as Sunaina Maira, Judith Brown, Vijay Prashad, Caroline Brettell and Faith Nibbs, this paper uses the key ideas of authenticity, Western gaze, hybridity, inter-generational relationships, and youth culture to examine Raas competitions. The paper argues that cultural authenticity and innovation are constructed, negotiated and even performed by the first and second generation Gujarati diaspora in the United States who participate in Raas competitions.
