Abstract
This project seeks to analyze how the Puerto Rican musical group Calle 13 represents a useful subject for interrogating identity in Latin America. Specifically, their music offers an opportunity to investigate how different subjects and forms of collective identity are imagined across three intersecting contexts: 1) on the Puerto Rican island itself, 2) in the colonial relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States, and 3) as part of a larger Latin American identity and cultural discourse. Through lyric analysis of the group’s four albums which are Calle 13 (2005), Residente o Visitante (2007), Los de atrds vienen conmigo (2008), and Entren los que quieran (2010), this research seeks to highlight themes, patterns and strategies as well as how these approaches change over time and across different spaces. News articles and interviews have been analyzed and incorporated in order to better understand how their music is consumed. In addition to the discourses that Calle 13 creates or perpetuates, what discourses do they silence or ignore?
